Overview

From 22 to 24 February 2012 the first ever 2WALKandCYCLE Conference was held in Hastings at the Hawke’s Bay Opera House in the Opera House Theatre.

The focus of this conference is on everyday walking and cycling for transport, recreation and tourism. It encompasses all aspects of trips made by these “active modes” (including promotion, infrastructure, safety, policy and training) and their integration with each other, other travel options, and our lifestyles in general.

Whilst planning the next NZ Cycling Conference the organising committee agreed it was time to consider holding a joint walking and cycling conference. This would replace the biennial cycling conference earmarked for late 2011.
Discussions were held with Living Streets Aotearoa (organisers of the NZ Walking Conference series) and agreement was reached on this concept. Representatives from Living Streets Aotearoa and CAN (the Cycling Advocates Network) are involved with the conference organising committee to help plan the event.

This joint conference provides a great opportunity to attract a larger number of delegates and speakers, while creating a wider audience and leverage for "active transport". It also enables both of the respective walking and cycling sectors to address issues within a broader context of transport and mobility planning, creating opportunities to tackle shared barriers and opportunities.

Theme
Creating Smarter Connections

Creating smarter connections is the key for unlocking multiple gains and improvements for our towns and cities throughout NZ.

Be it transport, tourism, health, the economy, the environment, sport and recreation or simply a better quality of life.The first ever 2WALKandCYCLE 2012 Conference will bring together a wide range of people and ideas to demonstrate how walking and cycling is central to unlocking these gains.

This exciting conference is all about action.

Creating = Cause something to happen as a result of one’s actions

Smarter = Intelligent action

Connections = The action of connecting one thing with another

So through a combination of plenary sessions, short presentations, workshops and networking, this conference will inform, challenge and equip participants about walking and cycling related actions required for creating smarter connections and thereby greatly improving our communities and country.

We invite local and international speakers to come share their ideas, solutions and projects in response to the Conference theme.
